The Augmented Ear of Caregivers: first results of a unique test in Switzerland

Can artificial intelligence transform the daily lives of caregivers and residents in nursing homes? The first promising results of an unprecedented test in Switzerland seem to pave the way for a new era of care.
The Humilimont EMS was equipped with 23 white boxes of this type. If this technology raises questions, the director and the head nurse say they are delighted.

The Gruyère Health and Social Network presented the results of an innovative test carried out at the EMS in Humilimont, Switzerland, using OSO-AI's artificial intelligence solution, called “The Augmented Ear of Caregivers”. This smart box, which can be installed in just ten minutes, captures and analyzes sounds in residents' rooms to detect emergencies such as falls or respiratory distress. Unlike traditional patient call devices, the program is continuously evolving through interaction with caregivers. They can validate alerts, thus improving the accuracy of the AI.

In a medical-social institution, less than 15% of residents have the capacity to use a traditional sick call. The Humilimont test showed that this new system fills this gap, also making it possible to react to incidents that could not have been detected with traditional patient call systems. As early as the second night, a silent fall was detected, proving the effectiveness of the device. While some caregivers were initially hesitant, trust in technology quickly took hold. Head nurse Mário Macedo confirms that the daily work of his team has not been disrupted. The system also ensures a privacy bubble by suspending activity when the family or a caregiver is present, thus avoiding unwanted surveillance.

The Humilimont EMS is now won over by this device, described as “simple and intuitive” by Mário Macedo. The system not only made it possible to optimize care planning based on residents' sleep, but it also proved a real added value by reducing night-time rounds. In addition, this technology has the advantage of being also available for rent, thus offering increased freedom to establishments.

Ethical issues related to the use of AI have been carefully considered. Only alert moments are recorded, guaranteeing the protection of privacy. As Olivier Menut, director of OSO-AI, “Ethics is a real subject. With artificial intelligence, the challenge is knowing where to place the cursor.” This successful test paves the way for wider adoption of the solution in other establishments in Switzerland.
